ABSOLUNA:
Ashe Kato

Enigmatically performing under many production alias names, the creative Ashe Kato gained worldwide fame for his refreshing, evolutionary and artistic style of electro-house, synth-pop, and fresh disco funk. Born in 1991 in Toronto, Canada, electronic music artist Ashe Kato began producing music at age 12. Inspired by the soundtracks of video games like Metal Gear Solid and Dance Dance Revolution, he began to experiment with these sounds, mixing the soundtracks in Portastudio.
Beginning with his seminal  1999 debut, Natural, Kato reimagined the 90s style of synth-pop, carving a genre of his own at the passing of the century as electronically produced musicians became popular. The famous 2002 follow up, Discordia, launched the now named Absoluna into a new platform of popularity, thanks to stage hits like “G-Shockwave” and “Cyberpower” bringing booming energy to crowds with their funky bass lines and punchy arpeggio designs. As time went on, Kato began adopting new elements, with minimalistic synth-heavy sounds in their 2004 album, Superbia.

The passing of 2005 would mark the start of Kato’s greater ascendancy, with new hit singles “Autumn Auburn”, “Language”, and “Nautilida” along with collaborative tracks with DJs Madeon and Mat Zo. Madeon and Absoluna released “Higher” in 2007, with vocals from Ace Hashimoto and Melaitre. That same year, Kato began his first Tour, Absoluna: Crossroads, across North America and Japan, and Europe in 2010. He rapidly gained his following and was regarded a top headliner amongst producers Porter Robinson, Deadmau5, and Daft Punk.

Following a 2 year hiatus in 2012, Absoluna broke back into the scene with his album, Integra, bringing back his signature synth-pop vibe with a new mix of glitch-hop and electro house. From 2016 on, Absoluna continued creating new bonds with the electronic music community, developing relationships with artists DROELOE, Yuc’e, No Mana, 2SYD, and Joji, producing EPs and singles and bringing fans closer. With the music world now ready for the next beat, we’ve since been watching for the next move from Kato.

Webmaster 2019

For the 2019 Technology Student Association Webmaster Event, teams were required to "Design a website for a band or musician of your creation. The website should serve as a guide for information about the band or musician.Present an overview of the musician or band as if you are in the music business. The website should serve as a guide for ways to purchase items, such as music, tickets, or merchandise, from the band or musician.Sections of the site may include photos, a biography, tour dates, a shop to buy/download music or merchandise, song samples, lyrics, appropriate links, and a fan message board or blog."

As part of the challenge, we created the musician, Ashe Kato (Absoluna), a Japanese Music Producer living in Toronto, Canada. To accompany Absoluna, we created Absoluna.live with a design representative of Kato's smooth, yet pronounced style.

Design Choices
While creating the persona of Absoluna, we took inspiration from popular artists and groups, each with their own styles; from Madeon, to Deadmau5, Daft Punk, and Porter Robinson, we reflected on what design trends and styles would best fit the Absoluna experience. Jumping from a brutalist feel to heavily-gridded layouts, we decided on creating a website based on bold typography, smooth but snappy animations and interactions, and large, clean background photos to make the most of Absoluna's musician website.

Right from the homepage, the user is greeted with a sweeping hero section animation and the bold colors of Absoluna's "sun" logo. The bright colors of the deep orange provide great contrast to the white text featuring the Aktiv Grotesk font and the dark blue background. A fixed navigation bar is naturally placed fixed at the top of the screen, making it easy for fans to find the desired page, while social media redirects are centered at the bottom. A smooth 3D transition makes the section above the fold immediately interactive and interesting enough but not distracting to the user.

Each main page is headed with a similar section, changing color based on the subpage; smooth section transitions give the user a flowing experience, resemblant of Kato's smooth synths and musical style. Bold colors from the logo are continually presented with each header and page, paired with clean copy.

Website Structure and Planning
For musician or band websites, navigation and organization must be easily understandable for users in order for the experience to be less about the website, and more about connecting fans with the artists. With this in mind, we took a very basic approach to our navigation bar and page structures.

Our Basic Map is as follows:

As for website structure, the pages are split up into sections defined by either VH or content amount. Creating the smooth section transitions was a challenge, however, the effect was created using sections tied to interactions between background-divs with varying Z-index values. Using "Scroll-out-of-view" and "Scroll-into-view" event types, we tied specific sections to background divs of different appearances. From the hero section, all the other bg-divs are set to hidden until the next section scrolls into view where the next set animation of a simultaneous fade takes place. This overall effect helped to create a website with minimal "folds" and hard breaks between sections without using static gradients or scroll jacking. Inside of the sections, content mainly follows flexbox layouts, with the occasional relative/absolute positioning (for heading sections), using multiple divs for desired organization.
